Minimize Frost Build Up

Major frost build up, such as an amount that you would need a chisel to remove, is indicative of larger issues, but some fridge models have minor amounts of frost build up as a normal part of its operation. Clearing away this small amount of frost periodically helps prevent your fridge from having to overexert itself to keep its temperature regulated.

Use The Power Save Mode (if applicable)

If your fridge has this option, use it! Most fridges have built-in wall heaters to inhibit humidity from developing in your fridge. Unless you’re seeing lots of condensation build up in your fridge, it’s not really necessary to have them running.

Monitor Temperatures

Turning your fridge’s thermostat up can save you quite a bit of money while still keeping your food at a safe temperature! The optimal temperatures for your fridge and freezer are 38°F and 4°F, respectively — you don’t need to pay to keep them cooler than that.

Don’t Pack Your Fridge Full

A de-cluttered fridge is an efficient fridge. Your fridge requires a good amount of space for air flow in order to maintain even temperature distribution throughout the fridge, so avoid jam-packing your fridge completely unless you absolutely need to for a large meal, such as Thanksgiving.

Use The In-Door Water & Ice Dispenser (if applicable)

Using the in-door dispenser (if your fridge has one) helps you minimize the need to open your fridge. The less you open your fridge, the less energy your fridge needs to keep food cool, and the more money you’ll save!

Clean The Condenser Coils

Your fridge’s condenser coils, located in the back or bottom of your fridge, help remove heat from your fridge. Dust them periodically to help them continue to function their best.

Keep Heat Sources Away

Nearby heat sources, such as direct sunlight, your oven, and other appliances, make your fridge’s compressor work much harder to maintain cool temperatures inside your fridge and freezer. If you can, position your fridge away from other heat sources in your kitchen.
