Make A Plan
Before you begin moving your appliances, it’s important that you plan the process out and prepare your new home accordingly. When planning your appliances’ move, be sure to complete the following steps:
- Measure the dimensions of your appliances as well as any doorways it will pass through in your old home or your new one. Doing so will allow you to choose the best route for moving your appliances in and out, and avoid getting stuck at any doorways.
- Measure the dimensions of the kitchen and laundry room in your new home to ensure that there’s enough space for your fridge, washer, and dryer.
- Empty your appliances and secure the doors so that they don’t swing open and hit things while being moved
- Clean the floors in your old home and new home to minimize friction and drag when moving your appliances
Protect Your Floors
It’s critical that you avoid damaging your floors when moving appliances. Damaging the floors in your old home could break your contract with the person that purchased your home, or cost you your security deposit if you rented.
To protect your floors, consider using plastic floor guides when moving your appliances. These simple tools slip under your appliances to provide a smooth surface for your floor, allowing you to push your appliances across the room without worrying about floor damage. Alternatively, you can also use a combination of plywood on top of carpet squares to achieve the same effect.
For moving appliances up and down stairs, consider renting a dolly or hand cart.
Protect Your Appliances
Your appliances need protection too, just like any other valuable item you’re moving. Be careful when detaching them and installing them — consult your user guide or call your appliance’s manufacturer if you’re uncertain about any steps in the installation process for any of your appliances. When moving them, protect the hard edges with foam, and consider wrapping the surfaces with bubble wrap or another protective covering.
